What a treat to read about Velva Jean's coming of age. I felt that I was right there in the sweltering Smokey Mts. with Velva Jean and her siblings as they try to find their way to a happy fulfilling life. The characters were complex and real. They struggled with the same feelings of insecurity, ambition, optimism and desire to do well that most of us remember from our teens. I loved that the Appalachian people and culture were described respectfully, not the usual pathetic hillbilly stereotypes. I can't wait to read the sequel so I can continue to follow the lives of Velva Jean and her siblings.Tags : Velva Jean Learns to Drive: Book 1 in the Velva Jean series [Jennifer Niven] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <strong><strong>From the author of the <em>New York Times</em> bestsellers </strong></strong><strong><em>Holding Up the Universe </em></strong><strong><strong>and <em>All the Bright Places</em> (soon to be a major motion picture starring Elle Fanning)</strong><em>,Jennifer Niven,Velva Jean Learns to Drive: Book 1 in the Velva Jean series,Plume,0452289459,Coming Of Age,Literary,Appalachian Region, Southern - History - 20th century,Appalachian Region, Southern;History;20th century;Fiction.,Bildungsromans,Bildungsromans.,Southern Appalachian Region;History;Fiction.,20th century,Appalachian Region, Southern,FICTION Coming of Age,FICTION General,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Literary,Fiction,Fiction - General,Fiction-Literary,GENERAL,General Adult,History,Southern Appalachian Region, great depression;holding up the universe;all the bright places;wwii;ww2;world war 2;world war ii;1930s;appalachia;coming of age;fiction;historical fiction;north carolina;southern fiction;dream;chasing dreams;singer;sing;nashville;tennessee;grand ole opry;country music;love;love story;romance;romantic;romantic fiction;novel;romance novel;literature;southern literature;series;follow your dreams;small town;south carolina;southern;south;american south;ya;young adult;young women;historical,1930s; appalachia; coming of age; fiction; historical fiction; north carolina; southern fiction; dream; chasing dreams; singer; sing; nashville; tennessee; grand ole opry; country music; love; love story; romance; romantic; romantic fiction; novel; romance novel; literature; southern literature; series; follow your dreams; small town; south carolina; southern; south; american south; ya; young adult; young women; historical; great depression; holding up the universe; all the bright places; wwii; ww2; world war 2; world war ii,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Literary,General,Fiction - General,20th century,Appalachian Region, Southern,History,Southern Appalachian Region,Fiction
Velva Jean Learns to Drive Book 1 in the Velva Jean series Jennifer Niven 9780452289451 Books Reviews
This story had me hooked from the beginning. I did not want to stop reading it at night but I also did not want to read the whole thing in one sitting. I wanted to savor the whole story. Velva Jean taught herself to drive and, I must admit, does a better job driving than I do. Her family life up on Fair Mountain, while not perfect, is one I would have loved and her relationship with her brother is a joy to "watch". Do yourself (and a friend) a favor and read this book? I say "and a friend" because you will want to enjoy the story of her life with a friend.
Velva Jean Learns to Drive by Jennifer Niven paints a rich portrait of life in rural Appalachia during the 30's and 40's and proves that smarts have absolutely nothing to do with education.
Velva Jean is young and poor and determined to make something of her self. She's brave, she's fearless, and she doesn't take no for an answer. This is a southern novel in its most optimistic form and a fun, yet poignant read. I especially enjoyed the truths woven in with the fiction regarding the role of evangelical preachers and creation of the Appalachian Trail just prior to WWII.
I don't think I'm giving anything away when I tell you she does learn to drive by story's end and her trip down the mountain is just the first of many adventures for Velva Jean. I cannot wait to see what awaits her as she comes into her own and explores the bigger world.
I highly recommend this book (and its sequels) for anyone who enjoys well written prose, engaging story lines, and relatable characters. Thank goodness for people like Velva Jean who teach us to pursue our dreams wherever they may take us!
A wonderful story of a young girl coming of age in the Appalachian mountains. Her struggles with a family life, marriage, and learning to be an independent woman.
Very heartwarming story
Complicated and great in-site into a young girl's journey through childhood discoveries, disappointments, love, and learning to understand and take into account her needs as well as those around her. Great book that takes you back in time when life was simpler but definitely not easier! This is a fun read about life in the Ozark mountains in the early 1900's and a young lady with a lot of grit! Loved it.
Velva Jean became a character you wanted to root for! This was an interesting story regarding the developement of the Blue Ridge Highway showing the pros and cons to it, and how it affected peoples' lives in that area. You saw the meaning of things through a child's eyes, and then how it all became clear when she became an adult. I loved to "watch" Velva Jean grow up before my eyes. Velva Jean's got spunk! How she learns to drive is hilarious! Good job, Ms. Niven! Highly recommended!
This was purchased to donate to my local library. I hope others enjoy this story as much as I did!
One of my all time favorite books. It's hard to write a book that develops characters that the reader starts caring about but this book does just that. I recommended this book to my aunt who totally enjoyed it as much as I did. We don't like overtly sexually or violent books. We prefer a good story with memorable characters. This fit both criteria.
I LOVED this book. Refreshingly clean, exciting, positive. Velva Jean is a take charge lady with a lot of talent and won't allow herself to be beaten down by her circumstances. I've already started Velva Jean Learns to Fly. I'm going to read the whole series. I've been wanting to read books like this for a long time. Thanks to Jennifer Niven for her talent!
