Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Goodbye Soldier, written and read by Spike Milligan.

"My name is Maria Antonoinetta Fontana, but everyone call me Toni."

"I'm Spike, sometimes known as 'stop thief' or 'hey you.'"

"Yeser, I know."

The sixth volume of Spike Milligan's off-the-wall account of his part in World War Two sees our hero doing very little soldiering. Because it's 1946. Rather, he is now part of the Bill Hall Trio - a 'Combined Services Entertainment' inflicted on unsuspecting soldiers across Italy and Austria - and is largely preoccupied with the unbearably beautiful ballerina, Ms Toni Fontana ("Arghhhhhhhhh!"). But he must enjoy it while he can before he is demobbed and sent home to Catford - so he does....

Goodbye Soldier (Audible Audio Edition) Spike Milligan Penguin Books Ltd Books

This is volume 6 in Milligan's extremely funny war memoirs. This covers the end of Milligan's military career and his transition back to Civvy Street and the entertainment business. If you've never read a book that's made you laugh out loud, then you will reading this. Milligan's view on war is clearly stated in the book but his humor always shines through. A look at life from a long gone era by one of Britain's greatest funny men. You can see where the Goon humor was nurtured in these books. If you are a Goon fan, a Milligan fan or indeed a British comedy fan, then this series of books are something you just can't not read.

I first read this series of books in my late teens. 30 years later I'm still reading them, new copies of course.

Has to be the only books I've ever read that have had me crying with laughter and unable to get a breath. Don't believe me? Read it for yourself.

Goodbye Soldier (Audible Audio Edition) Spike Milligan Penguin Books Ltd Books Reviews

His absolutely last (for the time being) war diary. Mostly concerns his relationship with Toni, an Italian ballerina, whom he met whilst a member of a travelling show in Europe. What happens to the relationship after he returns to England? We don't get told in this (last) war diary. A sad/happy/funny/touching account of part of Spike's life in 1946
This is another episode in Spike Milligan's wonderfully sad, poignant and hilarious series of war diaries. It's impossible to read any of these books (Hitler/Rommel/Mussolini/etc) without laughing out loud. And yet they are also the most honest, forthright and real war diaries I have ever read. In Goodbye Soldier, Spike is finally discharged and has to sort out what he is going to do with his life after six years in the army. It's a bumpy road, full of disappointments and setbacks, but it ends with the formation of the Goons with Peter Sellars, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine. More please,Spike!
This is a brilliant, witty, pithy, nostalgic book which I have read a couple of times. In fact I was so caught up in the story Spike recounted here about his days prior to demob, shared with the Bill Hall Trio and Toni that I wrote to him and expressed my appreciation (he wrote back too!). While the previous war biographies were already laced with the witty sharp humour that we would see in the Goon Show, the show which incorporated the Bill Hall Trio put it into practice!!

I think it was such a special time in Spike's life - his relationship with Toni and the simple, innocent times he shared with his mates and dreams of being rich and famous through his music - this really comes through in this book.

I don't know how you cannot fail to be moved by reading this part of the war biographies. In fact I am reading the war biographies from the beginning again!
The book was promised to be in "good" condition . It turned out to be like new . I mean I would buy this copy if it were on the shelf in a Barnes and Nobles , it looks that good . Great Service , great quality .
I have read this book many times , I got it out of my local library . Someone stole IT!
( not me)
I love this book. Spike is a guitar player in the Bill Hall Trio touring Southern Europe
post war . On the same bill is a young Italian dancer named Antoinetta. She is beautiful.
The story is basically about the tour and Spike and Toni's falling in love and having
the time of their lives . Including a naughty holiday on Capri . A lovely , touching and very
humorous book about one of the 20th century's great characters and his first true love.
Originally Spike Milligan intended his war memoirs to be a trilogy, but they eventually stretched to six volumes. This one is less funny than the earlier volumes (monty, His Part in my Victory is the funniest), but still has plenty of humour. Spike is travelling round Italy with a concert party and meets the exquisite Maria Antoinetta Fontana (Toni) and falls madly in love. Most of the book is about their romance, culminating in a magical holiday on Capri. Their romance is so hot I find myself wishing when I read it that they had got married, but they didn't. Maybe it was better like that, I doubt if Spike was an easy man to live with, and probably Toni would not have much cared for postwar England, how drab it would have seemed after Italy. He sent her flowers every year for the rest of his life, probably it was just as well they left it like that, a perfect italian romance.
A humorous personal insight to one man's scarred survival of war
