The story of the Void contains extraneous scenes, information and characters. At over 600 pages, it could easily be brought to half that if it was tightened up.The premise is a good one, even if we never understand why the villains gain from bad things happening. The protagonists, Darren and Audrey are created well, and I followed their every move through the novel. The rest of the cast of characters are rather flat, even Jack, Darren's roommate, who works with our H/H to solve the mystery.
While I am not a grammar zealot, I will warn those that are, you will find homophones, missing words, the to/too issue, extra words and so on. It started bothering me, and I am usually very tolerant. D. Haltinner, invest in a real editor and your story is likely to be fabulous, as well as more focused, especially if you spend a bit more time on character development and the ending, and less on sweating ( mentioned way too many times ). Just my opinion, take it, or leave it.
The ending was rushed and heavily foreshadowed. I don't know how many times, but so many, I felt battered. When it finally occurs there is no surprise or emotion, just an ' of course ' feeling, as the whole thing felt inevitable. I would have loved to know more about the history, what happened in '44, or the nature of that thing. Even the meaning behind Jack's password, as he didn't act like he knew anything. Ah the mystery!
Bottom Line: Inside here was a compelling story with two great protagonists. The author has obvious talent, just needs an Editor.

I picked this book because I love long horror stories, well, it was LONG! But, it was long because it was obviously never proofread or edited AT ALL! This author spends entire pages and pages and pages describing dry hump non sex, and then pages after of the guy staring at her boobs wondering if he should take her shirt off! Should he? Shouldn't he? Should he....
.. who freaking cares!!!!!!
So why did I bother going 600 something pages that could have been easily whittled down to 300? Because I thought the main plot of the story was a great idea and I wanted to see how it would end.... and it DIDN'T!!!!
Good thing it was free and the only bomb I've had out of the freebies so far....
I enjoy reading other reviews.
Interesting that many didn't much care for this book which i consider a good attempt. With seasoning, the author may become a good writer.
The story is written from a young person's pov. As i recall being late teens to twenties, personal insecurity is a bid deal and, imho, the author captured this very well.
The plot had/has major potential that, with a more experienced author could have been much better. Still, i liked how it was handled. Except for the ending.... it works, but it's not what i'd have wished. And that's fine, it's the author's story, not mine.
Plot holes, but what story doesn't have them?
All in all, a good read.
The concept for the book was interesting and was an interesting take on the good vs evil, but this is where my enjoyment of the book ends. I expected an exciting threat to the end of the world type story but was disappointed. I have three complaints about the book. First, the writing at times is juvenile. These are college kids and adults who at times talk like middle school kids. Also the anti-Muslim sentiments of several of the characters is completely unnecessary to the story. So yes, the main character had it rough growing up as a kid after 9/11 but the only thing needed to build this aspect of the character was the background story. Second, the ending is very anticlimactic. Several people go missing/die and nobody cares??? Third, (and if this spoils some aspect of the story for anybody I apologize) under no circumstances is rape the victims fault, regardless of their behavior. The interaction between the the main character and his girlfriend when she tells him she was raped is ridiculous. First off the inclusion of this was not necessary, and it added nothing to the story. In fact the story line between the two would have been better served by having her just cheating on him since this is what was alluded to up until this point in the story.
While excited about this book, I ended up being disappointed by how it unfolded. I am glad this book was free.
It could have been worse, but it was pretty boring, and at times I speed read through large gaps of pages without missing too much from the plot. The character had lots of back and forths with himself in his head - over & over - about whether or not he still loved his girlfriend even though she never spent any time with him, and she went out partying constantly without him; plus, she physically grossed him out with the fat layer around her abdomen, "clock pendulum breasts" and puggy face. The story went on likewise in the same vane, constantly reiterating the same ideas and thoughts for pages on end, with much of the dialogue between the characters following suit in similar fashion. Also, if I had to read about how the main character's armpits were synonyms for faucets, waterfalls, or streams again I was gonna hurl. There must have been some other creative way to get his nervousness across to the reader? There was just too many references to Darren's sweaty pits - quite possibly at least twenty. The sexual scenes weren't well done either - seeming to be described by someone who has no idea what a sexual encounter is like. And lastly, the "monster" was what exactly? A giant beetle creature perhaps, that made car alarm sound effects in the hunt? Whoop-whoop-ca-chunk? Really? The reader never got the satisfaction of finding out what it was at the climax either, as there was conveniently a large, bottomless pit that everything but a exoskeleton covered tentacle was hidden in. Lame, though possibly a better effort at writing than I could have done.
