Vamphyri! Necroscope Vol 2 Brian Lumley 9780812521269 Books

Harry Keough saved the world with the help of the dead when he destroyed Boris Dragosani. Now the world is free from vampires...or is it? You see, vampires are a cunning lot. They don't survive for over a thousand years by giving up their secrets freely and, even in death, Thibor Ferenczy still has a few tricks up his sleeve. It's up to the British top-secret E-Branch and Necroscope Harry Keough to free the world once again.

Necroscope II: Vamphyri! begins where Necroscope left off and ratchets the tension up along the way. It also delves into the vampire legacy/mythology and explores the history of its vampire characters. While I've read some reviews that lament this or that it's set in the world of Cold War espionage, I relish it. In fact, I give it an emphatic two thumbs up! I love that they explored the vampire history. It sets up Lumley's parameters to his Necroscope mythos and is vital to the rest of the series. As for complaining about it being set in the Cold War world of espionage, did you not read the first Necroscope? That's the setting they used and how someone could be upset that the second book in the series is a continuation of the same is beyond me. In fact, call me crazy, but I'm willing to bet a week's salary that we'll see more of that in the upcoming books in the series. So, if that bothers you, my suggestion is to stop now. For the rest of you, if you liked the first Necroscope, you'll love the second. Great characters, more in depth history to the characters and answers to questions that were left open from the first. Just a great, great book. Can't wait to see what Lumley has in store for me in Part III!

Vamphyri! Necroscope Vol 2 Brian Lumley 9780812521269 Books Reviews

This second book was even better than the first book!!! Like the first one, I could not put this book down!!! Harry is now comfortable with his powers and the great surprise is his son apparent greater power!!! Looking forward to reading book 3.
I am reading this series. It's been a long time but it is just as good as the first time.
Always loved these books. This is one of my favorite authors along with some others. He brings you into the book.
This is the book that ruined every other Vampire book for me. Mr. Lumley and his Vamphyri mythos is the best I've ever read. Nothing has ever come close to the sheer horror of these books. I'm looking forward to again reading book 3 "The Source", as it is the introduction of the Vampire world and all its grotesque imagery. Yep, I highly recommend this book. I've been reading them for years, and I still love them.
There are many many books in the necroscope series and I have read them all. I am re-buying them now some years later to read them again. If you like horror and super good writing that takes you to another world and explains once and for all times where the heck vampires come from in the first place, oh and where Gypsies come from too, you should love this series of books. Actually the later books (after the first two ) are even better. Much like Lord of the Rings or Dragon Riders of Pern, this series transports you to another world with different rules than today and without giving too much away, its nice for the good guys to win sometimes.
I would highly reccommend this series of books. But dont stop after this one read at least the first 5 before you give up, there are more amazing and fantastic things coming. And very steamy so not for little kids at all.
That's what my mom always told me. And when it comes to these books she was certainly right. Things either missed the first time or forgotten in the 20+ years since I last read them are plain as day now. And in my more mature (old) mind they are even scarier than they were back then. I have learned that things I believed in my youth to not be possible have in my "mature" years proved to be oh so very possible therefore am I now absolutely sure vampires can not exist? I not only except that they could possibly exist I am terrified of them. I luv this series even more this second time around. What lies still ahead in the few books(that I can remember) and all the mind bending that I am sure Brian has waiting down the path for me. If you like mind~numbing terror and ugly, ugly, ugly vampires ( sparkles in view) this series is for you. Highly highly recommended.
I'll get straight to it. You should certainly read this if you've read the first. It is excellent and is the best depiction of vampires I've seen in fiction. The story is a bit slow at first, though, and the communist motive feels a bit dated to me as a millennial -- although it captures the alternate time period which is what's most important and I wouldn't change that it was done in the way it was.

The missing star is simply because it failed to live up to the grandeur of the original. Dragosani's fate from the first book was a lovely twist I never saw coming, but I had guessed Harry's fate in this book rather early on (I don't want to give it away, though, because part of the fun was that I HAD deciphered the plot ahead of time!). It simply fell short of the original for me.

With that said, this book was excellent if not a bit slow at first. It didn't quite live up to the original, but is well worth reading.
